1 Timothy 3:1-7

Hey New Life,

Happy November! Our Weekly Devo passage for today comes from 1 Timothy 3:1-7, looking at the qualifications of an Overseer (Elder). Although most of us may not be an Elder, this passage speaks to us in two ways: 1. These are qualities we must all pursue. 2. This gives us guidance on whom to nominate/elect when the time comes.

Paul starts off with saying that it is a noble task to serve as an Elder. It is a high calling from the Lord. There is honor in shepherding and serving the members of the Body. The office comes with much hardship: unwarranted criticism, unseen sacrifice, unappreciated shepherding, etc. It's a hard calling, and yet it is a holy calling from the Lord.

There is only one qualification regarding competency, while the rest of the qualifications deal with character. The qualifications cover both public and private life. They also cover conduct as well as character. How do they shepherd their family and lied ones? How are they seen by others (also applies to Deacon in v. 7)? Do they bear the Fruit of the Spirit?

These are all characteristics we must keep in mind for our minds, hearts, and character. How are we able to pursue such character?

1 Peter 2:25 shows us that we are able to embody such faith and fruit, because Jesus is the ultimate Elder who lived out these qualifications perfectly and laid down His life for us as the ultimate Shepherd. Through His death and resurrection, His Spirit is in us and empowers us to live in this way.

Let us check our hearts and conduct. May our public and private lives be a reflection of Christ, rooted in His person and work.

In Christ,
Pastor Tim
